Insights about the Extended Workforce

The world of work is constantly changing and we try our best to keep you informed about those changes.

Impact of COVID19 on the workforce and contingent workforce staffing

Over 80 per cent of executives surveyed by Oxford Economics say they’re increasingly using contingent workers. As of 2020, it’s estimated that 40 per cent of the entire United States workforce and 45 per cent of the Canadian workforce will be comprised of contingent workers; a trend stretching across many industry sectors.

Globalization, however, is no longer the sole driving force behind the contingent workforce transformation, which leaders predict will see vast and long-lasting implications well beyond 2020.

The workforce has new drivers of change since the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the globe. The workforce is operating under uncertainty, adjusting to revenue losses and disruptions – with many small businesses facing the worst financial crisis they’ve seen since the recession hit in 2008.

Research firm Ardent Partners recently released predictions from contingent workforce industry leaders to gain additional perspectives on the impact of this pandemic.

Below is a summary of what workforce leaders expect.

Talent demands will continue to fluctuate

Certain industries like travel, casino and gaming, leisure facilities, auto parts and equipment and oil & gas drilling are the most affected by the pandemic, and have experienced massive losses in both revenue and employment. However, other sectors like healthcare, finance, retail (giants) and insurance are experiencing an influx in hiring in order to keep up with demands. These types of fluctuations should continue to be expected.

The pandemic will accelerate the “work from home revolution.”

As remote work has become the new norm for many full-time and contingent workers, more flexible work options may become a permanent perk offered by many organizations when filling a job role. This will also push employers to want to gain better visibility into who is working for them, when, where and how.

Expect a surge or “bounce” in the MSP and staffing agency space much sooner

While some companies are holding off on offboarding key contingent workers in order to be well-prepared for the economic rebound, others have increased their hiring efforts to fill hard to find roles in order to also be well positioned when a job becomes available — yet some industries will rebound much faster than others regardless of the company.Corinne Ripoche, President, Pontoon

Expect to see a movement around corporate communications

Organizations have realized that communicating messages of comfort, hope, condolence, emergency or unity to team of employees, contingent workers, suppliers, etc. is a manually labor intensive activity that still misses large groups of workers. Expect to see corporate communications and HR to look for better ways to identify and communicate with all resource types.

It will be industry rather than employment type that will take the brunt of the pandemic’s effect

The market will “re-dictate” which skills are now deemed essential. As the identified skills flourish, it will be the workers who will decide whether to take employment roles or build their own businesses. Yet a focus must also remain on those skills that are deemed “un-essential” in order to up-skill or re-skill workers.

Business owners are going to focus on core projects and company strengths

To rebound as quickly and efficiently as possible, employers will focus on what has historically proven to make them money. Access to capital will be the deciding factor on whether innovation, services or programs are funded.
