It is evolving into manufactured professional ecosystems: fake companies, fake references, AI-generated work histories, polished&nbsp;portfolios&nbsp;and digital footprints that can look&nbsp;legitimate at first glance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For organizations that rely on contingent&nbsp;labour, contractor&nbsp;programs&nbsp;and third-party workforce channels, this is no longer just a recruiting concern. It is becoming a workforce governance risk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Executive summary&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most hiring processes were designed to catch inconsistencies in a candidate\u2019s story, like a&nbsp;questionable date, an unclear job title, a vague&nbsp;reference,&nbsp;or a mismatch between what someone says and what their resume shows.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern credential fabrication is different, however.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of creating gaps, it creates alignment. A candidate may present a polished work history supported by a company website, LinkedIn activity, portfolio samples,&nbsp;references&nbsp;and AI-assisted materials that appear consistent from end to end.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That makes the issue closer to&nbsp;counterfeit&nbsp;goods than traditional resume inflation. The item looks real because the surrounding ecosystem has been built to make it look real.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This matters for procurement and workforce leaders because many organizations assume verification is already being handled somewhere in the hiring process.&nbsp;But when verification is treated as a generic step, fabricated credentials can move through the system without triggering concern.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The risk is especially important for roles with&nbsp;a higher&nbsp;\u201cblast radius\u201d: &nbsp;roles&nbsp;with access to sensitive systems, client environments, financial data, proprietary information, critical&nbsp;infrastructure&nbsp;or high-impact delivery responsibilities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer is not to scrutinize every candidate in the same way. The answer is to define where deeper validation is&nbsp;required, what evidence is&nbsp;acceptable&nbsp;and how suppliers are expected to document the validation they perform.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What this is not&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not anti-AI. AI can help candidates&nbsp;improve how they communicate&nbsp;their&nbsp;real experience,&nbsp;skills&nbsp;and accomplishments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is also not about slowing down every hiring process or treating every role as&nbsp;high risk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it is not about expecting recruiters,&nbsp;managers&nbsp;or suppliers to catch every issue on instinct alone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The point is that workforce programs need clearer standards. When credential fabrication becomes more sophisticated, organizations need verification practices that are specific,&nbsp;consistent&nbsp;and&nbsp;risk-based.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What it&nbsp;looks like&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A candidate presents a polished work history. Their resume is strong. Their LinkedIn profile appears credible. References respond quickly. Portfolio materials seem&nbsp;aligned&nbsp;to the role.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything appears to&nbsp;check&nbsp;out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But after the candidate starts, delivery is thin and difficult to&nbsp;validate. The experience described during the hiring process does not translate into the expected performance. A deeper review shows that the \u201cpast employer\u201d footprint was recently created, lightly networked and convincing enough to pass standard checks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue was not that no one&nbsp;cared. The issue was that the process was not designed to detect a fabricated ecosystem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical procurement takeaway&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Credential fraud succeeds when verification is treated as a checkbox.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stronger approach is to make validation more intentional across the workforce program. Procurement and workforce leaders should define:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Which roles require deeper&nbsp;validation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What acceptable evidence looks like beyond references.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How&nbsp;suppliers&nbsp;document the validation they&nbsp;performed.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When concerns should be escalated.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who owns the decision when candidate information cannot be&nbsp;validated.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How patterns are tracked across suppliers, roles, business&nbsp;units&nbsp;and&nbsp;geographies.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is especially important in contingent workforce programs, where hiring velocity is&nbsp;high&nbsp;and multiple parties may touch the process before a candidate is engaged.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is not to create friction for every hire. The goal is to apply the right level of validation to the right roles, based on risk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start here&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start by&nbsp;identifying&nbsp;the roles where fabricated experience would create the greatest business risk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From there, define what must be&nbsp;validated&nbsp;before engagement begins. For higher-risk roles, references alone may not be enough. Organizations may need to&nbsp;validate&nbsp;employment history, project experience, identity signals, work samples,&nbsp;certifications&nbsp;or other role-specific evidence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Procurement, talent acquisition, IT, security, legal,&nbsp;HR&nbsp;and business leaders should&nbsp;align on&nbsp;the standard before an issue arises.
