Healthcare leaders are increasingly having to distinguish between the two \u2014 new facilities, new platforms, greenfield builds where AI isn\u2019t a feature request bolted on in year three, it\u2019s a design constraint from day one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That difference changes the shape of the work entirely.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Why retrofitting is constrained work<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retrofitting AI onto legacy infrastructure means working around what\u2019s already there \u2014 data models built for a different era, integration points that weren\u2019t designed to feed a model anything, governance frameworks written before \u201cAI\u201d was a line item. There\u2019s no legacy to work around, which sounds like an advantage until every assumption must be made correctly the first time \u2014 how data flows, how clinicians interact with the system, how the whole thing scales before a single patient walks through the door. Even sizeable internal teams may need outside expertise for this kind of work: a fixed opening date doesn\u2019t wait for the org chart to catch up with the ambition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>When the opening date does not move<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sharpest pressure point is the timeline. A greenfield build tied to a physical opening date \u2014 a new tower, a new campus \u2014 doesn\u2019t get to slip quietly the way a software rollout sometimes can. The building opens when it opens. That kind of fixed deadline, layered onto a build this technically ambitious, is exactly where even a well-resourced team starts to feel the gap between \u201cwe have enough people\u201d and \u201cwe have enough people who\u2019ve done this specific kind of work before.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>What the build team actually needs<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Headcount alone will not answer this.
